Opened in 2022, the Controlled Environment Agriculture Research Complex (CEARC) is a state-of-the-art space for industry partners and scientists to research sustainable indoor food production and find solutions to continue to feed a growing population.

The complex consists of a 15,000-square-foot headhouse, which provides classroom and meeting spaces, offices, potting areas, storage spaces, and a processing lab to support daily operations in the greenhouses. It is also home to over 25,000 square feet of growing space, with both a 4-compartment commercial-style greenhouse and an 8-compartment traditional research greenhouse. In 2025, the CEARC was awarded a 2025 International Architecture Award, recognizing its innovative fusion of research, education, and architectural excellence.

This facility incorporates the land-grant mission of teaching, research, and extension through cutting-edge research, advanced technology integration, industry partnerships, and the creation of a dynamic learning environment.
Research in Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) is critical as we continue to need to produce more food for a growing population in less space. Benefits of CEA include:
- Year-round production of food
- Reduction of food waste
- Higher quality, more nutritious food
- Sustainable growing conditions

With the CEARC, Ohio State and CFAES have the opportunity to be at the forefront of research and innovation within Controlled Environment Agriculture. The CEARC also provides a space for educating the public on new research in CEA, as well as showcasing the incredible work of Ohio State faculty and students.
