What is your role at Waterman Lab/CFAES?
As Director of Waterman, I oversee and support the operation of all activities at Waterman Agricultural and Natural Resources Laboratory. This also includes Columbus Greenhouse Operations, the operational lead for Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens, and the operational support for the Olentangy River Wetlands Research Park.
What brought you to The Ohio State University?
I completed my Master of Science at Purdue University in 2010 and was evaluating options to continue my education. The Ohio State University was preparing to transition from quarters (10-week terms) to semesters (14-week terms); I took advantage of an opportunity to join the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE) as a Lecturer teaching in the Agricultural Systems Management (ASM) program. I spent 9-years in FABE, focused on education and academic advising while completing my PhD in Agricultural Safety and Health.
Why work for The Ohio State University?
This is the place to be. I don’t think there has ever been a more exciting time for an academic institution than what we are currently experiencing in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) anywhere else in the country.
What interested you in your field of study?
I never woke up in high school and said, “I want to be involved in higher education when I grow up!” Frankly, as a first-generation college prospect, I wasn’t too excited about attending college. At the University of Missouri, I found a passion for learning. Then, at Purdue University, I found a passion for teaching. Now I am in a position where I can impact 10,000s of people every year by supporting the work of our faculty, staff and students, to showcase their work at Waterman.
Where is your hometown?
Shelbyville, Missouri
What is an interesting fact about you?
My areas of interest are production agriculture, environmental sciences, machinery systems, and technology. In my time, I can use some of the latest technologies. As an area of civic service, I currently serve on the Board of Directors for the Pickaway Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD).
