Animal Agriculture

Current animal agriculture on the Waterman Agricultural and Natural Resources Lab includes the dairy, home to registered Jersey cattle. High-quality Grade A milk is produced from a herd of 100 cows. The farm is a closed herd and raises all replacement heifers on-site, approximately 150 to 170 head at a time. 

Starting in 2023, renovations of the existing dairy barn will include a robotic milking system, robotic feed kitchen, and robotic manure scraping system.

Multispecies Gambrel Barn

The 1929 white gambrel barn is being used as part of a gap strategy to allow hands-on animal agriculture experiences for students. The barn temporarily houses swine in the fall and sheep in the spring semesters as part of the Animal Production courses taught by the Department of Animal Sciences faculty.
